Kalamullah's Quran Tafseer Course is a guided, structured path to understanding the meanings behind the verses of the Qur'an, not just reciting them. Students move surah by surah through trusted classical sources such as Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Tafsir al-Tabari, and Tafsir al-Sa'di, explained in clear English by qualified teachers.
These English Tafsir classes online are delivered one-to-one or in small groups, so you can follow a complete online Tafsir course in English from anywhere in the world, at a time that suits your schedule.
6–9The Quran Tafseer Course at Kalamullah takes students from the foundations of Tafseer methodology through verse-by-verse study of the Qur'an. Subjects include asbab al-nuzul, key Tafseer terminology, Juz' Amma in depth, selected Makki and Madani surahs, and thematic Tafseer, taught by certified teachers in live sessions.
Our online Tafseer classes in English accept students who can already read the Quran confidently in Arabic. Instruction is delivered entirely in English, so no prior knowledge of classical Arabic terminology is needed.
Teachers explain classical sources and unfamiliar terms in plain English, and you can stop to ask questions whenever a verse or scholarly explanation is difficult to follow.
Every teacher on the Quran Tafseer Course at Kalamullah holds a documented Ijazah or equivalent qualification in Tafseer and Islamic studies. Credentials are verified before any teacher is assigned, and each teacher is trained to explain classical Arabic sources in clear, accessible English for non-Arabic speakers.
Students choose between private one-to-one lessons and small-group classes at enrollment. Private classes let the teacher focus closely on one student's pace and questions, while small groups let students study alongside others at a similar level, both following the same structured curriculum.
Sisters who prefer to study with a female teacher can request one when enrolling in the Quran Tafseer Course. Kalamullah maintains a dedicated pool of qualified female Tafseer teachers, and the request is honored from the first session onward.
Kalamullah runs online tafseer classes in English seven days a week with morning, afternoon, and evening slots across all major time zones. Students book directly around work, university, or family responsibilities, and sessions are rescheduled without penalty when genuine conflicts arise.
Kalamullah organizes the Quran Tafseer Course into five modules covering specific surahs and Tafseer themes in a fixed order. Students can see exactly what has been completed and what comes next, rather than studying Quranic Tafseer without a defined learning path.

Book a free trialEach module builds directly on the previous one, so students who come to learn Quran Tafsir from the foundations move step by step toward independent understanding of the Quran.
Students begin by learning how Tafseer works as a discipline, the difference between tafsir bi'l-ma'thur and tafsir bi'l-ra'y, and which classical sources this course draws from and why. Key terms such as asbab al-nuzul, naskh, muhkam, and mutashabih verses are introduced with simple examples.
This foundation ensures that vocabulary never gets in the way of meaning once students begin studying specific surahs in later modules.
Students start with the surahs most already recite daily, moving verse by verse through the 30th Juz' and connecting these short, familiar chapters to their revelation history and classical scholars' explanations.
Teachers assess understanding at every surah before advancing, so students build confidence with material they already know before tackling longer chapters.
Students move into longer Makkan surahs centered on faith, the afterlife, and the early Muslim community, learning how these themes are argued and illustrated across a full surah rather than in isolated verses.
Teachers track each student's grasp of these themes before introducing the legal and social material covered in the next module.
This module covers Madinan surahs dealing with law, social conduct, and community life, where Tafseer also draws on the rulings scholars derived from specific verses, connecting Qur'anic Tafseer to fiqh.
Students consult more than one classical source at this stage, learning to compare explanations rather than rely on a single interpretation.
The final module traces themes such as patience, gratitude, and the stories of the prophets across multiple surahs, followed by a structured review of everything covered before students progress to the next level.
A closing assessment confirms the student is ready to approach an uncovered surah independently using the tools learned throughout the course.
Each outcome below is a skill the student can demonstrate to their teacher at the end of the Quran Tafseer Course, not simply a topic that was covered during sessions.
Students consult more than one reliable Tafseer source and recognize where explanations complement one another or emphasize different aspects of an ayah, without relying on unsupported personal interpretation.
Students explain the meaning of any surah covered in class in their own words, including its central themes, message, and key lessons, rather than repeating a translation from memory.
Students give practical examples of how themes such as patience, gratitude, justice, or reliance on Allah apply to everyday choices and behaviour, connecting Tafseer study to daily life.
Students identify the relevant historical context and occasions of revelation for major surahs studied, explaining how these circumstances shape the interpretation of specific verses.
Students apply the method developed throughout the course, identifying central themes, examining context, and consulting reliable sources, to a surah that was not explained directly during class.
Students reference and briefly summarize an explanation from a source studied in the course, such as Tafsir Ibn Kathir or Tafsir al-Sa'di, rather than relying only on a general interpretation.
