In Arabic, a letter is never “just a letter.” Swap one sound and you can change a meaning entirely — قَلْب (a heart) becomes كَلْب (a dog) with a single misplaced letter. That is why the scholars made makharij — the exact birthplace of each letter — the foundation of Tajweed.

After twelve years of teaching students from London to Toronto, I can tell you that the same five letters cause most of the trouble. They are not random: each pair shares a neighbour in the mouth, and the ear — especially an untrained one — hears them as the same sound. The good news? Every one of them is fixable with awareness and a few minutes of daily drilling.
