How often do you make dua to Allah?

Is it something you regularly do throughout the day, or do you only make dua during times of struggle?

The concept of dua is a powerful tool for all Muslims, and it’s something we should make a habit of doing for everything in our life. Here’s an infographic that will give you reasons why you should make dua more often:

(1) There is A Dua You Can Make For Any Situation

It’s inevitable that life will throw you off your course. We are going to face challenges with regards to our health, wealth, careers, families, and every other area of life.

Allah tells us in the Qur’an that life will be full of tests.

[He] who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed.
And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving
Chapter 67, Verse 2

We are also taught that we should make dua in times of struggle as well. Throughout the Qur’an and the Sunnah we have numerous examples of dua we can make to alleviate our situation.

So where can we find these dua?

One popular book you should have in your library is called Hisnu-Muslim (Fortress of the Muslim) which contains dozens of dua for every situation. That could be something we do regularly such as when we enter the washroom, or it can be a dua for a difficult problem such as paying off debts.

You may be able to find this book at your local masjid or bookstore, and there are copies available online.

(2) Your Lord Has Promised an Answer

Allah tells us in the Qur’an that He will respond to our dua.

Call upon me; I will respond to you
Chapter 40, Verse 60

If our Lord has promised us that He will respond to our dua, then we should strive to make as much dua as we can!

The Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) made it a habit to regularly make dua to Allah. They would make dua for even the smallest things.

“You should ask Allah for all of your needs, even if the strap of your sandal breaks”

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

(3) An Opportunity to Ask for Forgiveness

We are all sinners. We all fall into mistakes from time to time.

Our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us, “All the sons of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent often”. [Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah]

Repenting for our sins is an opportunity for us to seek forgiveness from Allah for our shortcomings.

(4) Dua is the Essence of Worship

Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Dua is the essence of ibaadah [acts of worship].”

Did you know that through the 5 daily prayers, there is one dua we make at least 17 times a day? Can you guess what it is?

It’s the verse near the end of Surah Fatihah, “Guide us onto the straight path.”

That verse is a dua. Whenever we pray our salah and recite surah Fatihah, we are asking Allah for guidance. Dua is indeed the heart of our worship, and it is an action that brings us closer to Allah.

(5) Increases Love Between Muslims

Our religion has the most beautiful greeting: “Assalamu alaykum” or ‘peace be upon you.’

The act of greeting another Muslim is a dua in itself. It’s also an easy way to increase the love we have for each other.

“By Him in Whose Hand is my life! You will not enter Jannah until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I inform you of something which, if you do, you will love one another? Promote greetings (salam) amongst yourselves.”

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

We should strive to increase our salam to our fellow Muslims.

A Lesson on Sincerity and Patience

We’ve covered 5 different reasons why we should strive to make dua to Allah more often in our daily lives. However, there’s one more important item to keep in mind and that is to be sincere and patient with our dua.

Continue to make dua, but don’t give up if what you asked for has yet to happen. Allah may respond to your dua before you know it, and other times He may delay the response or give you something better than what you asked for.

We need to make sure we are sincere in our dua, and be patient with the outcome.
